One of a series of monographs published by the PK Trust. This A5 booklet covers the period from about 1800 to 1851. Starting with Claude Chappe's establishment of a mechanical telegraph system in France to the laying of the first submarine cable across the English Channel. It is illustrated with numerous drawings and diagrams from the Porthcurno Museum archives. The title is taken from a note by Hon F.W. Cadogan, company director, to the Board of Trade in 1851, "... we must secure for Britain.... all the advantages... from the use of this stupendous engine, the Electric Telegraph...."
