The GPO Story plus animation
By way of an introduction to the GPO Classic Collection, The GPO Story, an hour long programme co-produced by the Post Office and the BBC, tells the story of the GPO Film Unit's bold experiments in movie-making. Extracts from many of the classics and interviews with many of the film makers are included.
Animation.
These short colour films feature some early revolutionary work animators Len Lye, Lotte Reiniger and Norman McLaren. Included are:
Colour box (Len Lye 1935)
Rainbow Dance (Len Lye 1936)
Trade Tattoo (Len Lye 1937)
The Tocher (Lotte Reiniger 1938)
The HPO - Heavenly Post Office (Lotte Reiniger 1938)
Love on the Wing (Norman McLaren 1938)
This is a lovely film, featuring interviews with many of the staff from the GPO Film Unit about how the unit evolved and the interpersonal relationships between some of the people who worked there.
Learn how stories like "Night Mail" and "North Sea" were filmed, some of the tricks that were used and how many of the interiors were filmed in a studio at Blackheath.
The GPO Film Unit went on to make public information films and propaganda films just before and during the 2nd world war with titles such as "London can take it" and "Squadron 992" before becoming the Crown Film Unit.
