MNDX No. 295
MNDX No.295
September 2002 and MNDX 295 is parked up next to a water tower on a preserved steam railway in the Midlands.

The exchange is now fully restored, both inside and out, and is integrated into the railway's internal (Strowger based) network via Auto - Auto relay set LD (loop-disconnect) junctions running through an underground 30-pair cable.

History

MNDX No.295 stood for about 15 years at Lochgilphead, Argyll until it was removed circa 1998 to Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker, near Nantwich in Cheshire. In May 2000 it was reported that...

It is very faded externally...

"It is very faded externally and a bit knocked about internally. Someone removed the MDF, cutting lots of large cables, and most of the relay set covers are dotted all over with rust spots. It is anticipated that the exchange could be modified to run again, at least enough to make selectors work and phones ring, but without proper junction facilities."

The Restoration

In late 2001 MNDX 295 was sold and moved to a preserved steam railway in the Midlands.

Inside, all the two-motion selectors, uniselectors, relays etc., have been fully overhauled; all can covers restored and resprayed; a full regrade has taken place and the missing MDF has been replaced. Outside the MNDX has been repainted in the correct shade of GPO green and professionally sign-written in its exact original form.
