MEN in the THG |
||
The THG is always looking for new members and is an equal opportunity
organisation. Men and women are equally exploited if they volunteer to help
! |
||
| The male stereotype is one whom collects 'old junk' including
possibly rare telephones, stashed away in a corner of the garage, shed or
den. Sometimes this spills over into the home and becomes a necessary modern
innovation of communications between all rooms, in addition to the normal
telephone, cordless model, answering machine, mobile, pager and of course
the Internet connection. How many of you have a PAX, PMBX, PABX or a rack
or two of Strowger sitting in a corner? Many of the active members in THG
have a good selection of all of the above. |
||
You don't have to be interested in telephones to join the THG as
communications covers a whole range of topics and there is plenty of scope
to specialise in other aspects of this extensive industry. |
||
| Membership Profile | ||
It's somewhat ironic, that women are stereotyped as the active talkers,
have worked in vital jobs playing an important part
in the history of telecommunications, and yet currently the
THG has a predominantly male membership. Ladies if you're reading this,
tell us why the heritage of communications
doesn't particularly appeal to you, and if it does, then why not
join
us for a year or longer. If you've
got an interesting heritage
story to tell, you don't have
to be a member to contribute. |
||
| Typical Interests | ||
| A number of members are really passionate about their hobby
and have Telephony in the Blood while the
President is particularly interested in
the 405 line television system. Others help out at a number of museums
and heritage sites across the UK, such as the
Museum of Rural Telecoms/
Bletchley Park or
Avoncroft, all of which are
mentioned within our pages. Exceptionally, some members
collect phones, but don't have a connection
to the outside world! |
||
| Tell us about your work in the Communications Industry... | ||
Even if you don't want to join the THG, why not
tell us about your involvement in the
communications industry, past or present. We'd be interested to hear
from you. Take look at the Study Day Plans for ideas
of what to contribute. |
