Buyers Beware!
May we remind potential buyers that they must satisfy themselves of the suitability of any goods they purchase, and let the buyer beware. In particular, the offer of any item for sale, on these pages, should not be taken to imply approval for connection to the PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network. In the case of newer items, this may sometimes be indicated by either a green approval label or a red triangle prohibition label. Information is given in good faith, but inclusion on these pages does NOT imply endorsement by the THG, its members or officers. Your statutory rights are not affected by this notice.
Electric Plugs
If you are selling any electrical appliance (in the UK) without  a plug on it, you are breaking the law. The Department of Trade and Industry has announced that domestic electrical appliances manufactured or imported into the UK must be fitted with a correctly fused 13-amp plug. We suggest that items sold as antiques should be exempt so long as they are clearly marked "Collector's item, not to be connected to the mains without examination by a competent electrician."
Cadmium Plating
If you've ever taken old radio, television or even telephone equipment to bits, you've probably found greyish-looking steel parts with a powdery white deposit. This is apparently cadmium salts from steel which was not properly passivated. Gases released by rubber, plastic and plywood parts react with the cadmium plating and cause these salts to appear over time. Whilst the powder will wipe off easily, do not inhale it or put your fingers in your mouth without washing them first-cadmium is fairly toxic, so be warned!
It is rather old!

A lot of the equipment that you collect may not conform to present-day safety and electrical standards. In the case of high-voltage apparatus it may be lethal in the hands of the inexperienced. Readers and potential buyers are warned to take their own precautions and use plenty of common sense.
