Ffestiniog Railway |
The Ffestiniog railway is the oldest independent railway company in the world! As well as offering a great day out in some of the most beautiful surroundings, the railway has an extensive collection of telecomms equipment working on the line. Ranging from the original manual exchange that served the area, through strowger PABX's, an overhead pole route with some 250 poles and carrier equipment their system now includes optical fibre too. The telecomms equipment here handled over 54,000 calls last year, testament to how well it has been maintained. Although the telecomms side is usually hidden away, visitors are invited to contact the Signal & Telecomms staff to arrange a tour of some of the exchanges. Details below: Ian Gylee: |
